Though 2011 has been considered one of the best vintages in Sicily, I found the 2010 vintage of this wine to be my favorite at a recent luncheon with winemaker Alessio Planeta. The wine is made with 100% Nero d’Avola from the heart of the Noto DOC area – which is where the grape originated on the island. Good red fruit on the nose and red berry flavors on the palate, and beautifully integrated tannins. An attractive vein of acidity brightened the wine, and showed off its characteristic freshness even now, six years after harvest, making it easy to keep sipping the wine (and hard to spit). Pairs well with light meat and hearty poultry or fish dishes.
