What people forget about red wines is that they can be great when they are lighter and more delicate than the blockbuster fruity bottles we’ve gotten used to from warm-climate vineyards. These more delicate wines can also have complexity, especially if they are from areas like Bordeaux – or if they are Bordeaux-style blends like those that California’s Beaulieu Vineyards specializes in. BV sources grapes from a variety of cooler and finer vineyards in the Napa Valley. The 2014 BV Tapestry is a solid, mid-range, cabernet sauvignon-based Bordeaux blend that has earthy, fine-grained tannins and blackberry fruit that are seamlessly integrated: ripe flavors with touches of cave-minerals and lively acidity on the palate. Texturally pleasing, with medium finish. Serve with plain grilled steak or chicken, food that is very good quality but not rich or opulent.
