2009 Mason Sauvignon Blanc

Nose of pink grapefruit and apple, with a very slight back hint of spice—cinnamon, maybe? Very clean and rich on the palate, with elements of the pink grapefruit and peaches. The fruit is very expressive—this is not an austere, steely Sauvignon Blanc. Finishes long and clean. Impressive. Try with grilled shrimp. Highly recommended. GT

NV Adami Bosco di Gica Brut Prosecco

Begins with light aromas of pears and apple blossoms. Floral in both aroma and flavor, with pears and apples for fruit. Despite its lightness, does pair well with a number of foods, including fish and seafood. You could start the evening with this and continue through the first course of the meal.

Review: The Wine Trials 2011

The Wine Trials 2011 is an interesting book. It has two basic premises, which it purports to support with scientific research. The first is that people, both wine experts and regular wine consumers, are so subject to the placebo effect that they cannot accurately judge the wines they like without tasting them – blind. The second is that people, when tasting wine blind, prefer inexpensive wines to their more costly brethren. Indeed, they go so far as to say there is no reason to purchase expensive wines. Therefore, they limit their reviews to wines that retail for $15 or less. The book is broken up into two sections, a discussion of methodology and support for the underlying hypothesis, and the reviews. This review will be similarly divided.

2006 Black Pearl Vineyards Oro

Opaque purple in the glass, with a nose of chocolate, smoked bacon, and nutmeg. (Chocolate and bacon is a great combination, in fact.) Opens up tantalizingly but with great promise on the palate, with long, expressive flavors of black currant and nuts, perhaps pistachios. The Shiraz and Cabernet are in fine balance, ending in a languorous finish. A really splendid wine. Try it with really good, true, smoky BBQ brisket (which may be as difficult to find, or more so, than the wine if you are outside of Texas.)

2008 Hacienda Araucano Clos de Lolol

Toulouse, and the Rhone, and the French influence is remarkably clear in the blend of the red, which goes for elegant subtlety over big fruitiness. It offers up aromas of tomato leaf, supple blackberry fruit, and a hand-in-hand balance of black and white pepper so well in-tune with one another that might as well have been singing “Ebony & Ivory.” Read more review by Joe Roberts on his site, 1 Wine Dude
