On December 10, eighty-five wine professionals, wine aficionados, and wine-curious friends gathered at the home of Palate Press Publisher David Honig for the 2010 Palate Press Grand Tasting, an evening of blind wine tasting. We opened 135 different wines from around the world, from Ahr to the Yakima Valley, and from Assyrtiko to Zinfandel.
A big wine, a full, spicy mouthful of black fruit - blackcurrant and blackberry - and loads of spice - black pepper, white pepper, eucalyptus and toasted maple. Wood treatment is obvious, but the fruit is big enough to balance it out. Tannins are powerful but smooth, showing years of remaining cellar life. Drink with a porterhouse, with the filet side early, and the strip side after it gets some air.
This is a clear bright straw color and very viscous. The palate is rich with tropical fruit flavors, mango and pineapple, all with a light wood undercurrent rather than the heavily toasted oak of so many Sonoma Chardonnays. The finish is mid-length with fresh pineapple predominating. This is a food wine, one that would pair well with Pompano en Papillote.
