East vs West: Cool Climate Palates and California Chardonnay

One very interesting aspect of the wine tasting profession is the notion of a regional palate. The difference is clear to those who judge at competitions that use tasters from all over the world, or even just from different parts of North America, from east to west coast. There is a definite propensity for those who taste mainly wines from the west coast, whether it is the Okanagan Valley in BC, Washington, or California, to prefer lower acid, “bigger,” more fruit forward wines. West Coast palates also tend to be far more tolerant of higher alcohol wines.

2008 Rene Lequin-Colin Chassagne-Montrachet Clos Devant

This is a single vineyard, Clos Devant,white Burgundy from Chassagne Montrachet. It is translucent, with a light golden hue. The noise has an apple pie and caramel sweetness with a lovely white flower bouquet. The palate offers up rich flavors, starting with baked apples, adding creme brûlée and Meyer Lemon on the mid-palate, all with underlying toast and smoke. Gardenias, sweet lemon, and creme brûlée linger on the lasting finish. Acids are very good. This is a good food wine or a delicious sipper. Drink with grilled swordfish. Very Highly Recommended. DH.

Palate Press Wine of the Week: 2008 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Édition Limitée Chardonnay

Clear, bright, medium intensity straw yellow. Clean, medium-full intensity aromas: rich yeast roll and oak, caramel, toasted almonds, yellow apple, and Bosc pear. Dry on the palate with medium-full acidity, full bodied, and intense flavors. Yellow apple, pear, lightly toasted nuts, chalk, whte plum confiture, and candied lemon. Long finish. Pair with a creamy pasta dish, heavy on the tarragon and sage. Highly recommended. RR

NV Patrice Colin Les Perles d’Anne-Sophie

Interesting nose showing apples with a light background of wood smoke. Baked pear with a lemon background lead on the attack. The Pineau d’Aunis makes its presence known on the mid-palate, with pencil lead and wood smoke. It is full-bodied with a mid-length finish. Acids are quite bright. Drink with smoked trout to match the smoky flavors, or sea bass for contrast. Recommended. DH
