Palate Press Wine of the Week: NV Graham Beck Brut Cap Classique

Clear, bright, medium straw yellow. Fine bubbles cascade up the glass. The nose is clean with medium intensity aromas of lemon, chalk, biscuit, cooked yellow apple, and yellow cherries. This is a dry wine with a full mousse, and large fleeting bubbles on the palate. It has medium-high acidity, medium body, medium alcohol (11.5%) and flavors of bright citrus, grapefruit, lemon, and green apple. The finish is long and creamy, and leaves a taste of salted caramel in the mouth. A good wine, especially for the suggested retail price. Pair with a salad with fresh fruit, grilled white peaches, roasted sole, or white chocolate truffles with black sea salt.

NV Moutard Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée

Medium mousse, with bright apple flavors and a toasted bread yeasty background. Soft citrus flavors, Meyer lemon and Valencia orange peel, appear on the mid-palate and surpass the apple on the finish. This is very pretty wine at a reasonable price, but lacks layers of flavors found in great Champagnes. Drink with stone crabs.

NV Veuve Clicquot Brut Yellow Label Champagne

Golden with persistent bubbles. A bright, lightly yeasty nose with fruit and a touch of toast in the flavor, which is creamy and even has a bit of anise. Medium-big body holds up well with foods. Lively citric finish, long, with minerality and then toast at the end. This season it also comes in a little yellow fridge case, which keeps a chilled bottle at drinking temperature for a couple hours if you're traveling to a friend's house. NV Veuve Clicquot Rosé Champagne

Medium salmon-pink, fine mousse. Delightful light yeast, fruit, and toast in aroma which intensifies in the flavor. The finish is moderately long with raspberry and tart blackberry and mineral-citric edges. The fruit becomes more pronounced with food, especially with a great pairing like lobster. This season the rosé is packaged with a pink zippered cover which keeps a chilled bottle cooled to the correct temperature for drinking, for a good two hours. For more info see Becky Sue's blog.
