2010 Blenheim Vineyards Viognier

Well-balanced, very aromatic and tropical on the nose but dry and refreshing as you gulp it down happily in the summer heat, it was also one of the closest things to Rhône Viognier I tried all weekend. Well-defined and quite pleasant, it goes well with charcuterie, smoked fish, and spicy Asian food. 20% of the wine is aged in oak—but I couldn’t have told you that without reading it. Recommended. RC

2010 Ceretto Blange Langhe Arneis

Very fresh aromas waft from the glass, and limestone is the first thing to hit the palate. It’s even a bit spritzy on the tongue at first. Flavor layers range from well-vinified fruit to underlying sherry. With citrus in the finish, it would be tempting to dismiss this wine as a Sauvignon Blanc-wannabe, but this white has much more muscle, finishing very strongly. Drink with anything from pasta to sausage. Recommended. BSE

Palate Press Wine of the Week: 2010 Youngberg Hill Aspen Pinot Gris

Clear, bright, medium intensity golden yellow. Aromas of tropical fruit inundate the nose: pineapple, mango, banana, and guava all blended together. Soft hints of ripe, juicy melons and pears that run down your chin when you bite them. On the palate there is definitely a little residual sugar, but medium-high acidity balances it nicely. Medium-full bodied, with tropical fruit driven flavors, honeysuckle, and sweet apples. Match with a mango chutney or pineapple galette. Highly recommended. RR

2010 Casa Santos Lima Portuga

Clear, pale, watery gold in color. Gentle aromas of white peaches, tart green grapes, lemon zest, thyme, and sandy beaches. Dry, medium-high acidity, medium-light body, and soft flavors of citrus, melon rind, and sun dried herbs. Dangerously easy to drink. Pair with grilled zucchini and summer squash. Highly recommended.

Palate Press Wine of the Week: 2010 Bonny Doon Vin Gris de Cigare

Another wine, a rosé this time, in Randall Grahm’s own idiosyncratic style. Lovely nose of strawberry, melon, and flowers with a hint of vanilla at the back. Very expressive on the palate, especially for a rosé, with sweet but not cloying fruit notes, with a spine of acid and mineral running through it. Finishes long and clean. Not a wuss rosé and may be just the thing for your summer guests who are rosé-shy (if, like me, they’ve been subjected to too much bad rosé). Try with grilled shrimp. Highly recommended.

2010 Château La Freynelle Bordeaux Blanc

Very pretty floral and stone fruit aromas waft up from the glass, with apple blossoms and pears showing the most. Similar flavors show on the palate, with the addition of Meyer lemon adding a citrus tang. Partial malolactic fermentation softens the palate and adds apple notes to the mid-palate. Acids are well balanced. This is a very nice wine, particularly for the price. Drink with fresh trout. Highly recommended.
