2005 Havens Wine Cellars Bourriquot

The nose is rich - mulberry, unsweetened chocolate, and a ripe, meaty, gaminess. The cabernet franc leads on the attack, more blackberry than mulberry, with tobacco leaf and unsweetened chocolate. Merlot takes over on the mid-palate, softening to a silky mouthfeel and offering hints of red fruit and fine, dusty tannins. The finish is mid-length with lingering tastes of unsweetened chocolate. Drink with bacon-wrapped filet. Highly Recommended. DH

2005 Swinto Old Vines Malbec

Made from 100-year-old vines, this Malbec is gentle and pleasing. The nose has dry earth notes, and the flavor a slight spiciness. Dark berry compote with candied plum and burnt sugar, hints of cocoa, tobacco. Tinny tannins but a floral finish. Rounds out nicely with time Aerate and/or decant before serving. Recommended. BSE

Palate Press Wine of the Week: 2005 Miguel Torres Santa Digna Sauvignon Blanc “Selection”

Found this 2005 forgotten in the basement and brought it up for dinner tonight. What a great surprise! It was a bit warm but I twisted open the screwcap and sweet grass and herbs wafted out. The aromas persisted upon pouring: more sweet meadow herbs, a bit of limestone. On the palate, plenty of body, great balance, but the finish was a bit on the short side. Reminiscent of a very good white Bordeaux, with an appealing strain of chalkiness running through it. Highly recommended.

2005 Domenico Aglianico

2005 Domenico Aglianico, Sutter Creek Vineyard, Amador County contains 8.3% Petite Sirah from Lodi. Like the 2006, it was whole berry fermented, underwent extended maceration and spent 11 months in French and American oak. This wine offered a mature bouquet of cinnamon/nutmeg notes, floral, oaky hints and a vague hint of VA. In the mouth, it was faintly sweet, with very forward and mature flavors of very light briar and tobacco pouch. The body was remarkably light for the alcohol level. Structurally, it was supple, not too grippy and with high acids. A shorter, drying, finish of mature flavors and subdued fruit followed. On the second day, jammy, almost brambly fruit aromas were laced with a vague floral hint. Vague brambly fruit over light, hints of sweetness and light tannins, bright acids and light heat followed in the mouth. The finish, again, was lightly drying with light brambly fruit, oak notes and warmth. This wine was unobtrusive with brisket and the BBQ ribs but heat came through a bit. (15% ABV, 2 bottles tasted, 266 cases made)

2005 Penman Springs Vineyard Meritage

This is a very pleasantly juicy, reasonably-priced meritage. Cherries overly blackcurrant flavors, while dark chocolate, tobacco, and eucalyptus appear on the mid-palate. Tannins and acids are well balanced, and moderate, and the finish has a pleasant mintiness behind the mixed red and black fruits. Drink with duck.

2005 Marita’s Vineyard Select Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

Inky dark and almost impenetrable. A nose of tart raspberry, black cherry, plum, and blackberry jam with notes of black pepper, and hints of sensual smokiness. Ripe jammy raspberry, blackberry, currant, and cola balanced with notes of cedar, anise, black pepper, and cocoa on the palate. A full-bodied mouthfeel and big bold tannins with a long mocha and spice finish. This is a big, big wine and at least an hour decanting is recommended. Pair with a juicy porterhouse steak. With only 225 cases made, this would be an awesome gift for someone or a treat for yourself!

2005 SOMA Limited Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

When you first pull the cork out of the 2005 SOMA from Marita’s Vineyard, the aroma of blackberry preserves fills the room. Dark garnet-colored wine in the glass with a nose of big dark fruit. Very jammy on the palate, with balanced tannins and flavors of chocolate, leather and cedar. Not a touch of green pepper flavors to be found. Once it opens up, you’ll notice more cedar and spice. This one is delicate enough to drink alone (even at ABV of 14%), but pairs well with beef tenderloin or filet mignon.
