Twenty years ago, John Alban started Hospice du Rhône as an event to promote viognier wines. Over the past two decades it has come to be a global Rhône gala. So, it seemed rather fitting, on this 20th anniversary of HdR, to take a look at just how this variety, almost universally proclaimed as not age worthy, changes over time.
The nose is very pleasant, white flowers dominate, with melon and grapefruit in the background. Far more citrus leads on the palate, white grapefruit and lemon, honeydew showing on the mid-palate, all with great minerality and excellent balance. The region’s limestone and flint both show well. Drink with scallops. Highly Recommended. DH

This past week, Dr. Dipak Das, tenured research faculty at the University of Connecticut, was found guilty of 145 counts of research misconduct by an internal institutional review board. Das’s research findings had strongly supported the idea that resveratrol found in wine is capable of conveying health benefits to wine drinkers. It’s worth noting that even though Das was very prolific—that is, his lab turned out more than the average number of papers—Das didn’t publish in high-profile journals, whether because his work was rejected by the top-tier or because he chose to submit manuscripts only to less competitive publications. An investigation performed by the University of Connecticut has concluded that reseacher Dr. Dipak Das falsified data in 26 scientific publications, some of which were studies involving the controversial wine component resveratrol. Das is the head of a research lab in the Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Connecticut Health Center. His studies include effects of resveratrol on cardiac health.

With the cold weather here, many beer lovers are turning to warming winter tipples. Although we generally avoid these hearty brews in hot weather, when the cold descends we happily seek out and sip strong, spicy Belgian ales, licorice tinged Russian Imperial Stouts, malty Baltic Porters and Wood Aged Barley Wines.
