		<description>This is promising news.  While Greek winemakers face many challenges, the quality of organic wines in Crete is surprisingly superb to attendees of our seminars.  The small-scale vintners I know are dedicated and devoted to making high-quality wines.  For those that hope to export their products, I hope that they will have better opportunities in the near future.

		<description>Steve, I believe it&#039;s a good thing that the Greek winemakers have reached the phase where they experiment with different grape varietals. Out of all the international ones, Syrah seems to be exceptionally well suited to the Greek climate. It is also important to note that the Greek varieties seem to be going from strength to strength, and I am glad that they start receiving much more recognition. Xinomavro and Assyrtiko in particular result in wines that have distinctive own personalities that every wine lover should familiarise with.</description>

Interesting post. About 15 yrs ago, I was concerned that some of the more obscure Greek varietals would be replaced by more popular foreign grapes. Fortunately, that didnt happen and it&#039;s thrilling to sample many great Greek varietals which are coming into their own due to improved cultivation and wine making techniques. Gaia: Thalassitis (stunning), Retsina (just a &quot;must&quot; to educate the palate), Notios white (the only white I have ever encountered that pairs great with almonds covered in dark chocolate).
Hatzidakis: Santorini (his red Mavrotragano is great if you can find it).
Gentilini: Robola (great alternative to Chardonnay).
Mercouri: Kallisto (Mercouri works with many Italian grape varieties).
Mitravelas: Agiorgitiko (Can&#039;t think of a better introduction to this grape variety, killer value).
Kir Yiannis: Paranga (very good introduction to Xinomavro).
