2007 Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc Les Sétilles

November 29, 2009 by David Honig

The nose is redolent of honeysuckle. The palate is tart apple and lemon cream, with a background of toast. The finish shows a bit of browned butter. This is clean and refreshing, with a good acid backbone. Drink with lighter fish dishes.

Honeysuckle? Sorry Mr Honig, you have clearly never been hit by the early summer blast of Lonicera periclymenum as it rambles over a dry stone wall in a Scottish Highland glen. And what’s this background of toast? Really! I cooked a light fish dish today: Sea bream with leek and potato mash and leek greens in natural yogurt (recipe c/o Gary Rhodes) and I opened the 2007 to accompany it. It’s Ok. It’s a little sharp in the mouth and it lacks the buttery taste that I look for in good Burgundy whites. Les Setilles 2007 is not a moreish wine and it won’t be booking a place in my cellar. My advice: save up and buy up.
